Craft vs Art
Recently I was reading some articles on the Gestalt theory and one of the articles - not directly connected with the Gestalt theory, mentioned something about a gallery refusing several photographers work while accepting some. The ones that were rejected questioned the judges because their’s were perfect, perfectly printed, perfectly framed while the ones that were awarded gallery space were not printed with the best quality, some were not even in focus.
The rationale behind the Judges’ decision was to hold the photographs against a simple plumb line “is it art?”. Basically the ones that were rejected were perfect and all that means is the photographer was a good “craftsman” the ones selected were not necessarily perfect, but it was art. It had soul.
I thought about worship teams and wonder if we play with soul. Are we craftsmen or worshipers? Do we play with expensive instruments with a whole lot of talent but just play. Or do we play with our instruments - be it whatever, but have a good time worshiping?
Are we craftsmen or artists?
