Worship leader. Period.
This past Sunday had some tough questions and some relieving answers.
I love kids. They are such a joy to be with and learn from. Over the past couple of weeks I have slowly transitioned from being on two worship teams for the adults to one worship team for the adults so that I would have more time to invest with the kids on Sunday. The worship leaders of the future.
This transition had it’s share of human pride attached. It is a lot more fun “playing” on the adult worship team, the large auditorium, a larger audience, better sound, so many ears to impress and so many compliments to receive.
Contrast that with the kids worship.
Not that I was struggling, neither were these factors stopping me or affecting my decision to invest in the kids, but, they were thoughts that popped up nonetheless.
However, after worship with the kids on Sunday, God addressed those thoughts in His always gentle spirit. A worship leader is just that, a worship leader. It is who you are, not defined by who you lead.
It is just that in these days, for our own understanding, we’ve introduced terms such as youth worship leader, adult worship leader and kids worship leader. Most times these titles and terminology force us into such a narrow view of the call on a worship leader.
While there is nothing better than finding God’s purpose in your life and living it and enjoying it, be it whether it is for kids or adults or middle schoolers, worship or any other ministry, we tend to give that purpose a title and box ourselves in, we work within our title.
I believe that worship is not bound to age.
In our attempt to simplify, we’ve complicated things. In our attempt to streamline and organise, we’ve put God in a box, probably unknowingly. At least for me. It was freeing to break out of the title (aka box) “Kids worship leader” or “Adult Worship leader” and just be a worship leader.
